Russia’s Mail.Ru Group says almost 100% of hacked accounts inactive
MOSCOW, May 6 (PRIME) -- Almost 100% of user accounts with Russian Internet giant Mail.Ru Group, which were allegedly hacked, are inactive, the company said in a report on Friday citing its information security experts.
Reuters reported Wednesday that hundreds of millions of hacked user names and passwords for e-mail accounts and other Web sites are being traded in Russia’s criminal underworld, and the discovery of 272.3 million stolen accounts included the majority of users of Mail.Ru Group’s e-mail service.
Mail.ru Group said: “The conclusion is that 99.982% of the accounts with the Mail.ru’s e-mail service in the analyzed base are invalid. It was highly likely compiled from fragments of multiple outdated bases of logins and passwords gathered from hacks of some online services where users indicated their e-mails as logins.”
According to the statement, 22.56% of the indicated e-mails had nonexistent addresses, 64.27% of the rest had wrong passwords, 12.42% of the accounts were blocked earlier by Mail.ru Group as suspicious; and only 0.018% of the stolen accounts could be real, their owners have been notified of a need to change the password.
